Last year I had a calf injury early in the season and didn't get to race much but decided to attend the Nationals as I was getting a bit stronger at the time. I was thrilled with 2nd Place. This year my racing has gone well all season and while I've seen three of my strongest competitors in the CAT 1 40+ class fall by the wayside due to injuries, I've still had to work for every tenth of a second in order to see the podium.

Another 'plus' to this year's National race was the race course itself. I've always ridden well on rocks, and the upper course had Rocks, Rocks and more Rocks...firmly planted and surrounded by very light sand...what non-locals call "moondust". The kind of sand that you'd never put into a child's sandbox because it generates too much dust with any sort of stir. The lower course was spectacular, and this year 2 new gap-jumps were built up for the Amateur Bravehearts. And, this year the gap jumps had a landing that my healthy calf could handle. At age 46, and not wanting even a slight injury, I solicited the younger Experts to let me pace their speed into the 2 jumps that both lofted you a minimum of 25 feet across the thirsty grasses. I quickly became comfortable with the air-time that is never demanded of us at the local NW DH events. To quote a favorite Pink Floyd song "There's no sensation to compare with this - Suspended animation, a state of bliss"

On Saturday a.m. and after pushing my pancakes and maple syrup on the Davis Family, I headed up early. My Downhill bike was dialed for the course now with the assistance of the Fox Racing support crew (on Friday they went through my FOX 40 and revived my dampening valve). I had a great pre-race run and the new softer MN tread tire was working great in the moondust. Ann and Mitch were also very comfortable with their bike set up. We all had pretty clean race runs and great competition. I must have remembered "to practice like it's a race and race like it's practice." A spectacular weekend in Granby Colorado helped me bring home another silver medal - losing only to a former Pro National DH Champion by 1/2 second. I was also happy to survive and obtain a podium spot in the Super-D Race event Sunday.

-cb
tread282@msn.com

TEAM TAI Results:

Cross Country Chris still placed 2nd and was within 10 seconds to the 1st place rider. Chris's CAT 1 40+ group had a surprise showing of an X-Pro Champion Downhiller from the mid 90's, Robert Naughton. Rob won and Chris took 2nd place. Chris became friends with Rob and his wife and enjoyed competing with such a legend in the Downhill sport who now races trucks in the National Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Circuit. Rob is a genuine competitor and down-to-earth guy who can still amaze the fans on a DH bike. Chris, at age 46, is now leading the Fluidride Cup Series in points for his 40+ Cat 1 Category. Nice job Chris!

Ryan Miller's race was a bit different... at the very start Ryan took off and realized that his bike chain has come off, all within first 10 seconds! As the next rider passed him, he realized a full minute had already ticked away since the riders are sent down at 1 minute intervals. Fortunately Ryan was able to place his chain back on and he took off like a rocket knowing he had over a 1 minute to make up. Flying down the mountain, risking all or nothing, Ryan crossed the finish line making up the lost minute to place 3rd; a mere 3 seconds short of 2nd and just 20 second shy of 1st. Ryan did a great job of not giving up, what a way to hang in there! So Chris is off on his second run knowing he had to be consistent and clean, along the way Chris had a couple of rough spots and recovered nicely to finish in 1st by two tenth of a second! Nice job!

Ryan's first run down the track went very well, a bit sloppy through the first rock garden but the rest of the run went smoothly, Ryan was in 1st by only one second, with no time to waste it was back to the top for a back to back run down the mountain, Ryan took off knowing he had to do a repeat of the first run and hopefully gain a second or two, all went well as he pumped hard down to the finish line with a run time two seconds faster and took 1st place by 3 seconds, nice job Ryan! (Written by proud Dad)

Also Ryan and I would like to thank Chris for this coaching skills of riding to help give Ryan an edge, it paid off. Thanks again, Chris. ~Norbert

Ann Davis takes the Squamish Test of Metal

Results of the Test: Human

According to their website “For those in the saddle the unrelenting course will take the fastest just over 2 hours, the average competitor 3-4 hours and the humans 5-6 hours.”

My journey to the Test of Metal(TOM)actually began nearly 3 years ago after a Black Diamond race when Logan Wetzel suggested that I would like the Test of Metal. I looked at the website and thought it looked fun but did not pursue trying to register for it on 1/1/09. On January 1, 2010 I came to the realization that I had reached maximum density and I needed some sort of motivation to help regain and improve my fitness. I thought that the race would serve as a perfect goal. So later New Year's Day when the registration opened at 6pm, I was sitting at the computer ready. To my amazement the event sold out in a record 24 minutes 54 seconds and I was IN!

Now what? When I told Bob my plan of riding the 67k (41.6 miles) course with over 1,200 meters of climbing he responded “That is nearly 4000 feet of elevation gain. How are you going to do that? To which I responded “I am going to train for it.” Of course he has since earnestly denied ever verbally doubting my ability.

My first 12 weeks training program concentrated on establishing a XC fitness base, strengthening my core and losing weight. The next 12 weeks training program was a “50 miler Finisher” program. I still rode with various teammates and EMBA friends but it was my friend Deb Romaine who would ride the ever increasing long ride on the weekends with me. I had to be creative at times and 2 weeks ago even roped Mitch into riding 3 hours with me and then swapping my dog Roxie for Mitch for the remainder of the 6 hour ride.
I was lucky enough to have Deb and Andrea escort me to the race for a girls' weekend. We arrived on Friday afternoon and after a quick trip to Tantulas Bike Shop when we realized the shifting problems on my front derailleur wasn’t a simple fix, we were able join in on the Pre-Test festivities with a Poker Ride in downtown Squamish. The shop guys were great and were staying open late to 9pm to assist last minute TOM riders. They tinkered around with the derailleur for a few minutes and were able to get it to shift beautifully. They didn’t charge me so I wanted to support the shop and bought a chain slap guard and intended to replace the worn before the race.

On the day of the race, I had completed a total of 24 weeks of training and had lost a total of 25 pounds. Despite those 2 achievements I knew that climbing the hills would still present a challenge for me and I was slightly concerned about making the 1st cutoff at 2 hours 30 minutes. If I made that one, the next 2 cutoffs should be much easier to meet. At the start of the race we self-seeded ourselves based on our anticipated finish time. I confidently felt I could finish in 4.5 hours and beneath that sign is where I placed my bike upside down. WRONG! It wasn’t until after the race that I realized how much I overestimated my abilities.

After a very moving rendition of the Canadian National Anthem, we were sent off to the sound of bagpipes. The first portion of the race is invigorating. There were 922 of us racers speeding off for the first climb of 700 feet, all of which was on asphalt snaking through the neighborhood of Garibaldi Highlands. Both sides of the road was lined with people blowing horns, ringing bells and shouting words of encouragement, but my favorite was the homeowners who had set up sprinklers for us to ride through. It was only a couple minutes after 11am and it was already getting too hot for me.

At the top of the hill we entered Jack’s Trail and finally got some relief from the climb and some forest covering protected us from the sun. I settled in behind a woman who was wearing a pink and black jersey, she was one that I would switch places back and forth for most of the race.

The first 1/2 of the course would alternate between single track and then gravel fire service roads. My favorite portion of the entire course was a trail called “Rob's Corners." As no surprise it was a descent and was similar to a slalom course. Darn! I got “stuck” behind 2 women and a man thus was not able to fully enjoy railing the corners at high speed. Soon after this, around mile 16, I realized that my front derailleur was not working properly and it was stuck in my large ring (the bike only has 2 rings and a bash guard). I had 5 miles to go before the Power House Feed Zone, where I knew Deb would be able to give me assistance. Fortunately most of the next 5 miles was downhill and I was able to ride all of it but a short section which was too steep for me without my granny chain ring.

Riding through the feed zone I am scanning looking for Deb and Andrea. The volunteer ambassadors were kind enough to pour 2 cups of water over me in attempt to help cool me down. I don’t tolerate heat well and it is getting hotter and the past 5 miles I had been riding on exposed fire roads. I see Deb and told her what’s going on and she and Andrea immediately went to work to postion the chain on the small chain ring. With the 9 Mile Hill coming up I rather have only the small ring rather than the large. They worked quickly and I was off within 2 or 3 minutes. I had no idea how long I had been riding, and at the time it did not seem possible that I was close to the cut-off deadline but later on I learned I arrived only 12 minutes before the cut-off.

Nine Mile Hill is a long sustained climb on a fire road, similar to Tiger Mountain in pitch, but with a couple of level areas for temporary relief. I started out the climb with full intention of riding all of it, but the further I rode the more my conviction to ride it lessened. It ended up being much more of a hike for me then a bike ride. There were about 10 of us, including Pink and Black, who were in the same general area and slowly we made it up the hill leap-frogging. Half-way up the climb at the Bonk Hill Feed Zone a man obliged me by pouring a water bottle over my head and another down the back of my shirt. Cooling relief!

I knew by looking at the cheat sheet taped to my down tube that I still had 3.5 miles until I reached the top. I was in survival mode at the time and the thought of actually riding my bike on the descent kept me trudging upward.

Eventually I made it to the top of Lava Flow Hill and the fun began again. I had bought a Crank Brothers Joplin adjustable seat post and highly recommend it. Throughout the race course I was able to lower my saddle height instantaneously which allowed me to ride within my bike and better handle the fast descents such as the Ring Creek Rip. The Rip was about 4.5 miles of mostly riding in wooded forest sections alternating with loose, small to baby-head sized rock sections. I was finally in my element and was flying down the hill. The riders ahead of me would hear me coming and quickly move to the side of the trail allowing me to pass…it was here that I finally realized I had forgotten to install the chainstay guard and with me only having the small ring available there was plenty of excess chain that was slapping on the chainstay warning of my approach. At one time I realized I was over riding my ability and tempered my speed to a more sane level. Fun trail!

Next up was the Powerhouse Plunge. This is the most famous trail on the course. It was definitely challenging with large boulders to navigate and roll or drop, tight switchback, and 1-2 feet elevated wood structures. At this portion of the course I had caught up to a man dressed in a bright yellow jersey, who towards the end of the race I learned was named Peter. Peter was what I evaluated as a gutsy, but clumsy rider. He would ride then crash, recover and then end up passing me again in a couple of minutes. I had left Pink and Black in the dust at the top of the Ring Creek Rip, never to be seen again, and it ended up Peter took her place by playing leap frog for the rest of the race. After the slightly demoralizing hike up Nine Mile Hill it was rewarding for me to receive a few compliments from fellow riders and the couple of remaining spectators and first aiders about how I was able to ride the switchbacks, skinnies and rollable drops. Another fun trail!

Back to the Powerhouse Plunge Feed Zone, which by now was nearly vacated of spectators, I had the volunteer ambassador pour another 2 cups of water over my head and headed up towards Crumpitt Woods. Deb had waited for me here to make sure the bike was still working properly, which it was, but Andrea had headed back on the last shuttle bus to make someone was at the finish line to capture the Kodak moment. They obviously had more faith than I did in me finishing since they were not privy to my negative thoughts on 9 Mile Hill.

No sooner did I enter Crumpit Woods and start the last hill that Peter caught up to me again. The trail was a steep one, with 300 feet elevation gain in only 1 mile which meant Peter and I were hiking up the steeper sections of it. I confessed to Peter that I was “tired” and he responded that he was too but he assured me that I had finished the TOM as we were nearly there. Once we reached the top of Crumpit Woods the trail became fun. We got to enjoy the final descent of 525 feet. There were some tight turns, some loose rocks and even a couple of skinny bridges to navigate, but with the thought of the finish line within 6 miles our fatigue seemed to melt away and we rode with fluidity once again.

We emerged from Crumpit Woods to ride on a road for ½ mile or so and were surprised to see some homeowners still out there to cheer the last remaining racers on. We entered Smoke Bluffs for a short ridable gut buster hill and then emerged onto the road for the last .6 miles of the race. Peter offered to pull me in and he took off at an estimated pace of 17-20 mph. I did my best to stick onto his wheel but with only the small chain ring available to me, he eventually was able to pull away and finished 11 seconds before me. It is humbling to realize that the 17mph I just rode for a short time is nearly what the winner was able to average over the entire race course. Simply unfathomable to me!

What a feeling of relief I felt as I crossed beneath the inflatable finish line arch and saw Deb and Andrea on the other side snapping photos of my beaming smile.

They posted the results Sunday and I learned that the winning male set a new TOM record , finishing the course in 2:29:25 and the winning female took 2:51:53. My official time was 5:45:22 which meant I was 6th out of 8 in my age category. There were only 41 racers who finished after I did and there were an astounding 61 racers who did not finish the Test at all.

I met my pre-race goals of making the cut-offs, having fun and not dying. I am sure glad I did not establish a finish time goal. The positive side of being slow is that it makes it easier to better my time if I choose to race it again. It has to make our DH team captain, the title we have bestowed upon Chris, proud (concerned at times?) to have so many of us join in his love of riding fast.

• "Wine and Wrenching Night" on Friday at Deb Romaine's house. We learned that the spare XTR bottom bracket Diana from her Nomad that she had given to Deb last month was compatible with the Race Face crank set on Mitch's Reign. I am sure glad we noticed it needed to be replaced on Friday instead of next Saturday during my race when it would have inevitably seized up. Thanks Deb and Diana!

• Finally superb trail conditions on Dry Hill. It was tacky, not at all slimy like the first two races.

• Team camaraderie at its best. Mitch helped keep Alex and Damien entertained while Mike and Carolyn got their 2 practice runs in. Jim Shaver helped me salvage a screw off the Reign for my Frantik and kept the "loose screw" comments to a minimum. Chris Bentley suffered a flat on his last practice run and Diana promptly went to ensure he had all the supplies he needed to change the flat. Chris graciously lent his Demo 9 to Carolyn so that she could ride a bike that was much better at handling the rough stutter bumps on the Cat 2/3 course

• Chris Bentley proved that he could ride the Cat 1/Pro course with this monster of a tire and make the podium. It was so large I swear it looked like a moto tire!

• Diana Miller survived the weekend injury free and now with a Cat 2 race successfully completed, officially considers herself a Cat 2 RACER...something the rest of us already felt she was.

• Carolyn did not throw in the towel when she accidentally made a wrong turn during her race run. She had to push her bike back up to the trail junction to continue down the correct trail. Despite this navigation error she still made the podium in 3rd place. I may offer to give her orienteering lessons but I fear Jarrod and Joel may enlighten Carolyn of a certain Tiger Mt ride that turned into an epic ride.

• Receiving helpful tips from Chris; "lead with your knee in turns and use ALL your available travel of your fork" and then getting to show him after the run that young grasshopper rode well nearly using all the travel. I have come a long way in a year from where Chris insists I only used to use ½ of the fork's travel.

• Nothing like having 2 different women asking me if they could follow me down on Saturday pre-rides to see what lines I was choosing to help build my confidence as a budding dh racer. They seem to think that I am fast. Really? If they only knew how I am just now learning to overcome my tendency to hyperventilate from fear perhaps they would think twice about the request. ~ Ann

Team TAI Results:

Cat 1 Men 40+ (8 Riders)
3 Chris Bentley 3:36.64

Cat 2 Men 40-49 (9 Riders)
7 Mike Biddlecombe 3:30.02
8 Jim Shaver 3:30.40

Cat 2 Men 15-18 (12 Riders)
4 Mitch Davis 3:21.83

Cat 2 Women Open (9 riders)
2 Ann Davis 3:44.47
9 Diana Miller 4:21.70

Cat 3 Women Open (4 Riders)
3 Carolyn Prentice 5:20.41

13th Annual Bavarian Bike & Brews Festival June 4, 2010

Jenn Sinclair's Race Recap:

Great racing everyone!! And the weather was perfect!!

I have a really hard time at this race because they only put about 1 hour 15 minute gap between the the start of the Sport women and the Open/Expert race. I finished my first lap at about an hour which is what I typically average on this course with the climb but then as I'm working on the second lap the speedy Open/Expert riders catch me and I spend a lot of time having to pull over for them to pass. I love to cheer them on as they go by, but it really hurts my race time. I know, I know, I just need to get faster. :)

On another note, my BF, Doug, raced for the first time in the 34-44 beginner mens race and loved it. He finished 14 out of 17, I believe. He kept commenting on LOVING the jumps on the down hill. I think he's gonna be more of a down hill rider than cross country so I told him I needed to hook him up to ride with Ann and the down hill gang soon!! :) ~Jenn

TAI Race Results

Open Men-3 laps (18 racers)
4 Matt Lnch 2:00:29

Expert Men-3 laps (25 racers)
5 Mike Gile 2:18:43

Sport Men-2 laps 35-44 years (41 racers)
23 Chris Liebsch 2:09:01
28 Jeff Osborne 2:16:07

Sport Men-2 laps 45+ years (23 racers)
11 Francisco Pons 1:46:46
16 Bob McGee 1:55:38

Sport Women-2 laps 35+ (20 racers)
15 Jenn Sinclair 2:29:24

Sport Junior -2 laps 18 and younger age (8 racers)
8 Erik Beattie (no time recorded ?)

Beginner Junior- 1 lap 11-14 age (18 racers)
11 Aaron Agudo 1:11:04

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.blackdiamondracing.org/2010/06/13th-annual-bavarian-bike-brews.html' title='13th Annual Bavarian Bike & This year my goal was 14 laps (205 miles). Could I actually pull it off??

Boy, there were a lot of racers this year! The first lap is always chaotic, and for whatever reason I joined in the ruckus and rode super fast. In fact, my first 3 laps were pretty darn fast and my transitions even faster thanks to my husband Eric. By lap 6 I started to deteriorate though- I was actually getting bored (!) and was tired of riding by myself. I rolled into camp, plopped in a chair and had a meltdown. After declaring my intent to DNF several times Eric somehow talked me into one more lap. Fine. So after a few miles I stumbled upon "Ear Guy" (solo guy who had an ear infection and was riding slow) and a few miles later we picked up "Thigh Guy" (slowed by severe leg cramps). It was SO nice to have riding buddies. At that point I was in 2nd place.

Sometime in the early morning I was informed that the #1 gal dropped out. That was all the motivation I needed! Thanks to Eric and Molly Martin I knew exactly what my competition was doing and definitely used that to my advantage. Around 2am Eric said "Right now everyone is sleeping or taking a break- you have to get out there and put a lap on them!". So I did!

On lap 12 I was climbing up "5 minute hill"...and lapped the #2 girl. Aw yeah. Lap 13 was OK and 14 was painful- my right IT band lit up with even the slightest resistance. By then I was 99.9% sure I had won the race so I kept it to a light spin and walked all the hills. I rolled in around 11am and waited on pins and needles to see if anyone was heading out for a 14th lap, because that would mean 15 for me (ugh). But at noon the gun fired and that was it- I won the women's solo division!

Overall I had a great race. I don’t know what I would’ve changed other than the angle of my Ergon grips (fingers were numb for days).

Thanks to my fellow TAI members for their support! ~ Karyn

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dxlzOk1olLU/TA0b7bKtiFI/AAAAAAAAAyc/jOpMdOLiToA/s320/race.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480067029298677842" />

Russ Moul's Race Recap:

This was my second year competing in the 24 hour race in Spokane. Last year was easy, my only goal was to prove to myself that I could ride 24 hours straight, no breaks! As it turned out my 18 laps was enough to capture 2nd in the 40+ solo division and 3rd in the overall solo division. Of course, I was behind Vince who won the solo division with 19 laps. Having done so well I felt a lot of pressure to do as well or better this year. I wanted 19 laps.

I knew a number of people who were going to be racing this year but as always I knew one of my toughest competitors would be Vince. It sucks having a training partner who is always faster that you! So, I kept telling myself ride your race, your pace, that's all you can control. And that is exactly what I did, sort of. Unfortunately on the first lap, right after the first climb, the pack was picking up speed on the flat and my front wheel got tangled with the rear wheel of the guy in front of me. It is amazing how many bikes, including Vince, can pass you in the 10-15 seconds it takes to pick yourself up and get back on the bike. I must admit that this motivated me to work a little harder for the remainder of the lap; at least until the rock garden exiting Little Vietnam, where I pinch flatted. Tons of people pass you as you fix a flat. All said and done I finished the first lap in 1:11:24, not bad all things considered. The next two laps went by quickly, with times of 1:04:27 and 1:06:52, I knew I needed to slow down a bit, and by lap seven I had settled in to my pace and was quite comfortable, just ticking off the laps now.

Around lap nine or ten our shared pit crew told me Vince was on fire and would probably lap me in the next couple laps. "Thanks for the info, that sucks!" I come into the pit before starting lap thirteen and Vince's bike is in the bike stand, Vince was in the motor home, not feeling well at all. Not a good sign at all for Vince. But, being a true friend, I intended to capitalize on his misfortune. I knock 6 minutes off my previous laps time (I guess motivation comes in many forms). When I got back to the pit Vince's bike is gone, he is chasing me now. Lap 14 is another fast lap for me as I know Vince is right behind me. A third of the way through lap 15, I get another pinch flat. "You have got to be kidding me, Vince is going to catch me for sure now." It is hard to change a flat and look over your shoulder. Maybe that's why I broke the valve stem on the new tube. Now I couldn't get the tire fully inflated. I nursed it for the rest of the lap keeping the weight off the rear wheel wherever I could and barely crawling through the rock gardens. I couldn't believe Vince hadn't caught me but when I got to the pit it became clear why. Vince wasn't on the course, his bike was at the pit again. I quickly had our mechanic Darren mount my spare rear wheel and I was back on the course.

It was about this time I started seeing a lot of fast solo rides. "Wow, these guys are fast, what up with this?" Hmmm, the bikes are awfully clean, and for that matter so are the riders. I talk to a couple of them and learn they are coming off a restful night and getting in their remaining laps. Thankfully I'm 4-6 laps ahead of these guys. I let out a sigh of relief. Also somewhere in here the race leader lapped me. Damn! I approach the timing tent to complete lap 18, it is 11:36. They stop me and ask "Do you want to start another lap?". My answer, "Absolutely". I came to race for 24+ hours and I intend to (I can be a little stubborn about things like this) and I was going to make my goal of 19 laps. The final lap is kind of a special experience, at the top of each climb I mentally say goodbye to that climb until next time (if there is a next time). I finish in 25:04:51. My nineteen laps are good enough to win the 40+ solo division and 2nd solo overall. I'm pretty tickled.

Now I have a chance to talk to Vince, what happened? It turns out Vince suffered from some serious feeding issues which eventually led a lack of energy, and the death spiral that ensued. At times I feel bad having beat Vince, when he had probably the worst race of his life. But, then I remind myself what we always tell each other, "That's racing". ~Russ

Side note...
After all his troubles, Vince managed to complete 17 laps which was good enough for 2nd in his division and 5th overall. Not bad for such a young "old guy"

Team TAI Race Results:
Solo Men 40+ (21 racers)
1 Russ Moul 25:04:51.54 (19 laps)
2 Vince Haag 24:00:22.83 (17 laps)

Solo Women (11 racers)
1 Karyn Abraham 24:00:24.60 (14 laps)

2 Person (23 teams)
8 Allan Beattie & The trail was continuously changing from tight single track to short double track with several passing opportunities, if you're in the right spot of course. I didn't count the number of entries, but it seemed like a great turn out that included plenty of fast racers.

I personally started out strong on the SS, but started to run out of gas on the last lap and eventually got passed, ultimately getting 2nd place....bummer! I seemed to be destined to be 2nd on the SS.

Overall it was a great day to race!

~Chris Brown

Team TAI Race Results:
Open Men (7 entries)
7 Matt Lynch

Expert Men 35-44 (29 entries)
1 Mike Gile

Expert Single Speed (2 entries)
2 Chris Brown

Sport Men 35-44 (29 entries)
25 Chris Liebsch

Sport Men 45+ (26 entries)
2 Henry Shaw
16 Francisco Pons
20 Bob McGee

Beginner Men 35-44 (13 entries)
6 Jeff Osborne

Beginner Junior Boys 11-14 (7 entries)
3 Aaron Agudo

Thanks to Joe Martin and Francisco Pons for the photos

Race Report - Stottlemeyer 60, May 1, 2010

Vince Haag's Race Recap:

May 1st marked the first annual (hopefully!) Stottlemeyer 60. The event was put on by a local promoter, Kevin Reinkensmeyer , the “K” in K.O.R.E. www.koreevents.blogspot.com

Kevin is an adventure racer and endurance athlete who has seen the lack of endurance mountain bike events in the Pacific Northwest and is doing something about it. Based on the success of this event, I certainly hope he decides to continue!

The Stottlemeyer 60 was held on a swath of private land just south of historic Port Gamble near Hood Canal. The course Kevin laid out was a fantastic mix of tight singletrack, open flowing singletrack and an occasional gravel road section. The race started with a 2 mile gravel road section leading from the parking area, to the “laps” portion of the course. Once there, the race was 4 laps each about 13.5 miles each hitting trails with great names like Fun Forest, Forbidden Forest, Lower Mirkwood, Azkabaan and Derailleur. The intensity of the singletrack really gave the race a true mountain bike flavor. Adding to the fun was a week of steady rain. The course was very muddy which led to inevitable shifting and traction issues. Lots of fun after 3 laps with one more to go!

With only 53 people racing, Black Diamond Racing was well represented at the race with 4 of us. It was Russ Moul, Jenn Sinclair, Jeff Osborne and myself racing. There were many familiar faces from the Indie series with Ragnarok and Mafia Racing also well represented.

My race went very well. I worked hard to keep near the front on the road entry and entered the singletrack in about 6th place but soon lost sight of the young greyhounds up front. About ¼ way through that first lap though, I noticed that there were no tracks in the mud in front of me! The leaders had gone off course! I stopped at the first aid station to let the organizer know that some course markers must have been moved and about that time 4 riders flew by me! Race On! I chased hard for the next 2 laps keeping Andy Rigel of Mafia Racing with me until the very last lap where I finally put some distance between us. I wasn’t sure I was going to finish the last lap as I was hit by bad cramps and exhaustion, but I worked through them and ended up coming in at 5 hours 30 minutes in 3rd place overall and first in my age group (mens 35+).

It was a great race that I will highly recommend should Kevin make it an annual event! ~Vince

TAI RACE RESULTS:

Men 35+
1 Vince Haag 5:30
11 Russ Moul 6:26
DNF Jeff Osborne

Women 35+
DNF Jenn Sinclair

Fluidride Enduro DH #1 race recap

Chris Bentley's Race Recap:

The weekend of May 1st and 2nd was sure to be a hit. Fluidride's Simon Lawton kicked off his first ever Enduro DH series on the popular Dog River Trail just south of Hood River, OR. Gravity junkies, Ryan Miller (13 yr old Cat 3 DH racer) and I attended along with Ryan's dad who offered great mechanical support and photography. This series is sanctioned by USA Cycling and encompasses 5 individual race days falling into 2 official "Enduro" event weekends. - More info here.

The multiple shuttle vans started early Saturday morning. At the top of the mountain, we pedaled out to the starting area over some stubborn unmelted snow. The dirt on the trail, however, was awesome. I was able to get in 3 runs before the 1 pm Saturday race event began. Over 2000' of descending singletrack and a handful of tight switchbacks made for some aggressive braking from high speeds. Hard pedaling out-of-corners from a near dead stop was key to a good race time. However, much of the course was smooth and fast with great flow and corners to keep your speed in control. My highest speed on this narrow course came in at 35 mph. Having a shoulder injury from the week prior, I found that the large solid fir tree's zipping past me had my utmost respect. My Saturday race run was fairly cautious and pretty smooth. On Sunday I was able to step up the speed with the drier conditions. I'm now in 2nd place and 3 seconds off the leader going into September's event.

Ryan had an great race time on Saturday, but with an even cleaner run on Sunday he managed to best my 25 second improvement with a 30 second improvement over the previous day's race. Ryan had a successful 1st ever Super D race weekend and had a respectable time even when compared to some Cat II racers. It lived up to the hype definitely. Organizers do a great job. Weather was about perfect. Preriding Saturday, the wind was really howling. However Sunday there was hardly any wind and a little cloud cover kept it from getting too hot.

Tons of Swag, although I seemed to be about the only person that didn't win any. :P

I think I was 7 of 19 in Men's Sport 35-49. After getting though the tight technical sections of first lap, I was more confident about doing it again.

Course has lots of narrow ridgeline trail, very easy to be hitting rocks/brush on your inside pedal. The middle 1/3 of the CAT 2 course was new to me, so I needed the practice.

Saturday: Wow, some crazy weather. Rain, sun, hail, repeat. Doing 3 practice runs took almost 3 hours. 261 amateur and 110 pro riders meant a lot of waiting in line for the shuttle ride up the hill. Feeling more confident, but the track is a little slick.

Sunday: One practice run. The track is in good shape despite the rain and heavy use. My race run went well. Last race I made lots of mistakes on a familiar course. This race I only made a few mistakes on an unfamiliar course. Gotta like that! About an hour after the race I found out I had raced with a flat rear tire. Believe it or not, that is the first flat I have ever had while racing XC, DH or Cross, so I guess I was due.

I ended up with 6th place, missing 5th by about 5 seconds. I'm happy with that.
I am looking forward to the next race. ~Jim Shaver

Team TAI Results:

Cat I Men 40+ (11 Racers)

DNS Chris Bentley (injury)

Cat II Men 15-18 (15 Racers)

9 Mitch Davis 3:32:45

Cat II Women Open (13 Racers)

3 Ann Davis 3:53:64

DNS Diana Miller (injury)

Cat II Men 40-49 (9 Racers)

6 Jim Shaver 3:27:48

Mountainside Bikes--Team TAI has a new bike shop sponsor

Veloce Velo in Issaquah has recently expanded their store, nearly doubling the square footage of their store. Alex was awake before I was and was eager to get going. Normally, the race days have been "mummy days" when I get a bit of time from all the loving chaos! This race, though, was for the whole family including hubby, kids, and dogs. Mike was awesome and took care of them all while I got ready.

While driving to the event I passed my main competitor (thought to myself, is this foreshadowing??). Before the race, I decided to start out front and not get caught in the train of riders. It worked! I also changed back to riding flats (blasphemy I know for the true hardcore XC racers but my clipless pedals are useless if it's muddy).

My ritual for a race? Three ibuprofen, inhaler, 2 GUs, 1 apple, 1 energy bar, and IPod music- mind you listening to Moondance while trying to climb wasn't so great. On the last lap a fellow caught up to me. I asked if he wanted by. He said it probably was more advantageous for me if I stayed in front. How nice is that?

The best part of the race was seeing my kids and Jasper (dog) just erupting when they saw me. Still brings me to tears. They are the best fans ever! <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dxlzOk1olLU/S88wKN-_RtI/AAAAAAAAAqo/_GjA5T99-nM/s200/Carolyn+medal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462637825134380754" />I also met many very cool people during the series. One is Rachel Moore (a fellow Canuck) who raced beginner under 30. She came in first in her group. We carpooled to most of the races since she lives close and we had a chance to hang out after a few of the races. I am hoping to ride with her more since she's a lot of fun. The other was Karen Metcalf who won my age group for the series.

Alex and Damien played with Donovan, Chris L's son. They found a super big puddle. Wuhoo! I also won $8 that should help with the kids' college fund. Hah! Thanks for all the team support. You guys are great! ~Carolyn

TEAM TAI RACE RESULTS:

Beginners -Women- Age 40+
1 Carolyn Prentice 52:02; 2nd overall for the series

Sport -Men- Age 30 - 39

12 Chris Liebsch 48:58, down 1 lap

Sport - Men- Age 40+

16 Francisco Pons 1:10:02

Sport -Men- Singlespeed
2 Chris Brown 54:15; 2nd overall for the series

Expert -Men- Age 40+
1 Matt Lynch 1:11:04; 1st overall for the series

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 194px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dxlzOk1olLU/S88zXAj3tzI/AAAAAAAAArQ/-uwBdgMgCEA/s200/Carolyn+podium.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462641343404160818" />

Top 5 photos compliments of Joe Martin

BuDu #5 - Fort Steilacoom

The single speed class was a short, fast paced race and as usual I ended up chasing Brendan Connolly the entire time! Fort Steilacoom #5 race Budu series.
The sport race begun at 12:00 pm. This morning the weather was perfect for racing.
In the category Men 40+ racing for Team TAI was Bob, Troy and me; our race was two laps. I begun the race by trying to keep up with the front group with Bob and before the finish of the first lap Bob passed me. Bob was riding really strong.
At the beginning of the second lap there was a single track with a big barrier. Bob had a small problem deciding to pass over the barrier with the bike or by running, so at this point I had the opportunity to pass Bob. We finished the race nearly at the same time and Troy was not much further back. It is the first time that I have ridden this course and found it really fun. I highly recommend the venue for the next year. ~Francisco

Hardest part of this race was remembering how to spell Steilacoom! What a super day to get out and ride. Turned out that the track was incredibly fast and not too much competition for the beginners. Since I haven't been on my bike since the Soaring Eagle race I wasn't too confident about my racing ability. It was pretty easy out there, but do I ever have to work on my climbing and cardio. That used to be my forte`, now I don't have one at all :) Actually I was pretty happy just to get up at 6 am on a Sunday! Yours truly managed a 2nd place so my kids were stoked to have another medal to wear when I got home. ~Carolyn

TEAM TAI RACE RESULTS:

Beginners -Women- Age 40+
2 Carolyn Prentice 34:22

Sport -Men- Age 30 - 39

14 Chris Liebsch 59:38

Sport - Men- Age 40+

15 Francisco Pons 55:58

17 Bob McGee 56:01

21 Troy Hopwood 1:01:07

Sport -Men- Singlespeed
2 Chris Brown 43:57

Expert -Men- Age 40+
1 Matt Lynch 1:04:51
9 Jim Albright 1:11:08

photos comliments of Tim Burke

BMX Race Report 4/10/2010

Damien and Alex at age 4 and 6, respectively, are the youngest Team TAI racers out there, and hands down also the cutest! They joined Team TAI last October along with mom, Carolyn Prentice and dad, Mike Biddlecombe. Carolyn has been racing cross country in the BuDu series this Spring and both Mike and Carolyn are looking forward to racing downhill this year. This is the boys' race report from their first BMX race ever, demonstrating that the entire family likes 2 wheels and dirt, whether it is XC, DH or BMX....

Forgive mummy for including so many pics but it can't be helped. Alex
and Damien had their first team TAI BMX race on Saturday, April 10 at North Seatac. What a Day!!

The boys had lots of practice runs since we got there super early. And
man did they ride. They don't have proper race bikes but that
certainly didn't slow them down. Right at the start I got tangled with a guy next to me with our handle bars. As I was trying to push away from him he decided to pick up the pace and take me out. "Dirtnap" as Jeff called it right on the start line. Embarrassing. After that Jeff set the pace for me on the first lap, but then as soon as he saw his number one fans (mom, aunt & niece) were there to cheer him on, he picked it up and I couldn't keep up with him. Other than the huge run up, it was a pretty easy course. It would have been perfect for the cyclocross bike. :>)"

There are some photos of the race and a great picture of Jenn on the course here. There is really so much bike preparation, course analysis, and pre-riding that occurs behind the scenes to make those race times possible, that I find it difficult to include the high points of the weekend without creating a 12 page blog entry. But here I go...

Team TAI was represented by Jim Shaver, Zack Zander, Diana Miller and Ann Davis at first race of the NW Cup DH race series. The race promoters decided to split off from the Fluidride Cup and offer a new series with all 4 races at Dry Hill in Port Angeles. Yeah! We four are all relatively new to DH racing with all of us starting DH racing just last year; Zack at Cat 2 and Jim, Diana and I moving up this year to CAT 2.

It was an extremely fun weekend. I am still not sure about DH racing, but thoroughly enjoyed pre-riding, learning the course and hanging out with friends. I actually was way more relaxed than last year as I felt the pressure to win was lifted by moving to CAT 2 and I would personally be satisfied just riding the more difficult course safely.

In the recent weeks Linda Lee, Diana and I attended a DH clinic in Spokane and I have practiced drops with Evil Bob and Chris Bentley at Duthie Hill MTB Park. Slowly but surely I am transforming from Ann, No-Air, Davis. It makes a huge time difference to not be terrified to have the wheels off the ground and has increased the fun factor as well.

During the Friday pre-rides I felt that the brakes on my bike were holding me back from riding faster. Since I was not confident that they could slow me adequately, I was pretty much constantly on the brakes. The low end brakes were not an issue last year because I “needed” to stay at a lower speed so I would not get air. I was fortunate to be travelling with Diana and she just happened to have a spare set of Juicy 7’s I could borrow so we installed them Saturday morning. Much better! I am still not sure what brakes I want to buy, but at least I have something with better stopping power until I make my decision.

Riding conditions were good on Friday, very good for most of Saturday and then the rains hit Sunday morning. The women are the last racers of the CAT 2's and by the time I raced it was extremely slick out there. To further complicate the matter a bunch of rocks had been loosened up by the previous racers, requiring some split second changes from my pre-ride line selections to avoid plowing into the wayward rocks. I felt good about my race and rode as hard as I felt comfortable riding in the slop. My rear wheel was squirmy in 2 or 3 really muddy places but I remained calm and concentrated on keeping the front wheel going in the right direction, trusting that the rear wheel would follow. They installed a BMX style starting gate, which I find to be easier to start because they also installed a higher guide rail on the ramp (I am slightly afraid of heights). Unfortunately I asked the starting gate man to count me down, which he said he would and then he did not. I wasn’t paying attention to the beeps and must have lost about 1-2 seconds…lesson has been learned. I finished 7th out of the 12 CAT 2 riders.

Diana had some brake issues on Friday which necessitated her having to bleed the brake lines Saturday morning. Fortunately Diana is a competent bike mechanic. It should have been really simple, but was not; unbeknownst to Diana the Code brakes she is running on the Ventana have had some seal issues and after this weekend will need to be sent to Avid for warranty. A phone call to Evil Bob helped to diagnose the problem and she was able to complete the procedure and pre-ride all day Saturday. It sure is nice to have teammates to call on. Thanks Evil Bob! Diana ended up not racing. She had a fabulous time riding on Friday and Saturday, including mastering the drops on Motoguzzi, but decided she just wasn’t into racing on Sunday.

Zack has a new bike. Off season he picked up a Giant Faith with a Fox 40. He says it was much better on the course than his SX Trail but he still needs to dial it in. He finished 14th out of 17th in the very competitive CAT 2 15-18 age bracket. Zack was not able to ride bikes in the winter due to a non-bike restriction from his wrestling coach. Wrestling apparently is also a hazardous sport as Zack tore his ACL wrestling and was on the sidelines for the remainder of the season and until recently has not been able to bike. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dxlzOk1olLU/S7JkxU9mEPI/AAAAAAAAAmA/qgqkBqYYXlI/s320/Jim+Drop+Dry+Hill.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454532897302515954" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dxlzOk1olLU/S7JkAOL8kGI/AAAAAAAAAlg/Vm9ehf9RxCE/s320/Jim2+Drop+Dry+Hill.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454532053670072418" />
Jim is new to our team this year. On Saturday, Jim joined Diana and I on our last run so that we could further analyze the drops and line selection. I finally was able to ride with Jim and was impressed with his smooth riding style. On race day he finished 7 out of 8 with a time of 3:38 in CAT 2 Men 40+. The guys in his class are really well matched and ranged from 3:22 to 3:38 and 1 guy at 9:05. I recognized a few of his competitors as racing CAT 2 last year, which means they had the advantage since this was Jim's first CAT 2 DH race. It will be interesting to see who Jim will be able to beat in the upcoming races.

That covers all the Team TAI racers who made the race. NW Cup race #2 is on April 22-25. It is the first race of the Professional MTB Gravity Race Tour (PRO -GRT) which will bring out the top DH riders and hopefully more of Team TAI riders!

Race Results:

CAT 2 Men 15-18
14 Zack Zander 3:41

Cat 2 Men 40+
7 Jim Shaver 3:38

Cat 2 Women 18+
7 Ann Davis 4:21

Soaring Eagle Race Report-BuDu Westside Series #3

Yet another Sunday to wake up and ride! So it was a little drizzly at Soaring Eagle but the track was still pretty good. Thanks to Ann (again!) for pre-riding with me on Saturday. It helps so much to know what the course is like. It was a decent sized group of beginner women this week and everyone wanted to get going. It's interesting because if you don't start at the front, it is very hard to pass and catch up to the leaders. I'm learning this. Kind of a weird dynamic for me. It's fun but also competitive. You want to ride but also have a race mentality.

This race I learned that I DO need to start up front. And I have to watch the lap count. And I have to fix my seatpost. Thought I had to do 3 laps when really I only had to do 2. So I stopped to put up my seatpost, which turned out to be right near the end because I couldn't do another lap with it so low. But I lost precious time and maybe a placing. Doh!

Congrats to the other riders too. I like this series because I'm riding places that I don't normally get to and everyone is super friendly. ~Carolyn

Race Results:

Beginners -Women- Age 40+
4 Carolyn Prentice

Sport -Men- Age 40+
19 Francisco Pons

Expert -Men- Age 40+
1 Matt Lynch
