Black Diamond Training Ride

Thirty Seven degrees out, but hey, it’s not raining so I’ll go ride. I have to; my excuse pile is getting too big. I was sick. I’ve only been on the bike twice this year, I’ve gained weight. Shoot, I guess I’ll just pull out my very best excuse for being slow and uncoordinated: my new bike.

I showed up at Black Diamond Bike and Backcountry at 9:30 with my new fully rigid 29” single speed. Peter couldn’t help me out with a bigger rear cog yet, but he did make sure I had a spare tube to ward off the thorns. Once Aaron finished what appeared to be designing and building a new bike out of the back of his car, we headed out. Aaron, Chris, Henry, Joel and I rode from the shop to the trail head were we were joined by Aaron’s friends Chris and Brook and their two dogs.

There’s not a lot I can say about riding in Black Diamond. It was twisty, rooty, rocky, muddy with a few bridges thrown in for good measure. I was slow. I did an endo. I had fun.

I did however decide to cut it short least I hurt my knees before they even have a chance to learn about this Single Speed thing. Henry said I was free to go as long as I turned in a paragraph about our ride. Here you go. Thanks Teach! Thanks everyone.

P.S. Just added, a little video shot by Joel to prove we were really there:

29er Singlespeeds rule! You're old 26" bikes will get dusty.

I am still working on perfecting video'ing. Seems the location on my helmet needs some more work...

Nick - I read your review...you left out how awesome it was to ride
with such graceful dogs who took into account your every turn and
fall and never got in our way. I hope to have more team rides like
this one.

Anyway...how's the knee? You rode great despite the knee pain.

I asked Mr. Berres about this. My friend Bob told me to tell you:

"I just looked at the Redline Monocog Flight online. Blue bike. Looks
nice but it comes with a 32/16 gear combo. That is too hard a gear
for around here in my opinion. Nick needs to go at least 32/20 around
here. Maybe even 32/22."

Bob

I hope this helps.

The dogs were great and extremely more gracious and skilled on the trails than I.

I think Nick has been looking to upgrade to a 24-32 to ease his pain. Too bad he can not upgrade to stop the pain I give him.
